Rebooting A Podcast
Podcasting is how this all began…
The reason many of you are reading this isn’t because I’m “Twitter Famous” or have great SEO. It’s because you know me from my long-running podcast, Rogue Startups.
After listening to shows like Startups For The Rest Of Us (which I’ve been fortunate enough to be a guest on several times, and even had a mini series about my journey at Castos in TinySeed Tales), Smart Passive Income, Tropical MBA, and other similar shows I wanted to get in the game and start a show of my own.
On New Years Eve 2014, btw…this is what happens when you have a 2 year old and are mega stressed out with your day job, I launched my first episode of Rogue Startups, to crickets.
But I knew that this was the path I wanted to take.
I didn’t know anyone, had no connections, and didn’t really have any skills in business or podcasting.
I just wanted to be involved in the online business space, and the only way I knew to do that was to interview interesting people in the space. My first guests were people who are now friends like Brian Casel, Justin McGill, and Dave Rodenbaugh.
Shortly after Dave’s episode, we chatted, and he became the official cohost of the show.
For almost all of the next 275 episodes and 7+ years, Dave and I were on the mic talking about our journey as founders.
Through launching new things, selling, acquiring, and changing tactics and strategies more times than I can remember, Rogue Startups became a pretty big part of who I am as a founder.
But earlier this year we kind of slowed down. As you can see from our feed, we stopped publishing episodes as often, and frankly, we were just in a funk.
A few weeks ago, I chatted with Dave, and he let me know that he was ready to take a step back from the show.
While that was really hard to hear, I get it. 8 years is a long time to do anything, and I think our journey together on Rogue Startups was at an end.
But not for me.
Rogue Startups is still really important to me personally, for Castos, and for my personal brand. And I’m forging ahead with renewed energy, a fresh perspective, and a lot more power behind the show.
I’m going to be mixing up the format a bit. It’ll be an even mix of solo episodes where I talk through something I’m learning in my business life at the moment that I think would be helpful for others to hear.
The other half of the episodes will be with Guest Hosts (no, not Guests because this is not an Interview Show now), but friends and colleagues of mine that I admire, and want to have a chat with.
In these Guest Host episodes, we’ll dissect one or two big things going on in their businesses, and much like I did with Dave for the first 280 episodes, talk about how we’d approach solving the endless set of obstacles to overcome in our business.
I’ve already recorded a handful of these with some of the biggest names in the SaaS space, and I’m excited to share them with you.
If you’re not already subscribed to Rogue Startups you can do so by heading to:
Bonus points if you caught that the podcast is now on YouTube.
It’s been there for a while, but just hasn’t been a big focus of mine. Now since the Rebooting episode, every new episode I publish is going to be full length video on YouTube as well (complete with Shorts to compliment it).
This is the way of a Media Brand, and is a major focus of mine in the direction we’re taking our Castos Productions service.
We believe that every podcast should be on YouTube, should have Short Clips for YT shorts and other social platforms, and that Keystone Piece of podcast content you create each week should be the basis of your social content.
I’m dubbing this Podcast-Led Growth.
