Reflecting on 35 Years

I recently celebrated yet another birthday (woohoo!), and as is usually the case with birthdays it made me reflect a little on where I am today, where I was last year, and where I may be this time next year.

Usually this is not a super exciting prospect, but this year so many things are changing that it is actually quite invigorating.  Here’s a quick recap of what’s been going on in case you haven’t been reading the blog for too long:

  • My day job is actually going very well and I’m pleased to say that I’ve finally “hacked” that system and found some relative peace at work.  I’m performing at the top of my peer group, without a ton of extra work.  This is great.  However I am still a bit unsettled and am looking for an entrepreneurial venture to fulfill that void.
  • PodcastMotor is off to a great start, and has landed some really cornerstone clients.  I can’t thank them enough for their early support, and will forever be in their debt.  At this point I’m investing heavily in content creation, outbound marketing efforts, and building up a company that I hope to sustain my family in the next year or so.
  • On the personal side of things family life is great, we’re preparing ourselves for the changes that we hope will happen next year, and are very excited about it.  On top of that we’re going to Europe!  I signed up for MircroConf Europe in late August and we’re taking the whole family.  I think this will be a life-changing event for us (if we survive!), and hope the kids adapt well to life on the road for 9 days.

When there’s a lot of change in the air it’s important to regularly step back and take stock of things.  My wife and I do that regularly and make small course corrections on the path as we go.  These are never really significant changes, but just small ones that keep us firmly on course to achieve the goals we have for ourselves, our family, and our business.

The biggest thing that has impacted the last year really has come in the past few months:  success in PodcastMotor.   It’s just opening so many doors.  Getting an early win, that’s scalable, is now opening my eyes to what could be.  And it’s not a pie in the sky dream that I have.  If things continue down the path they’re going it’s a very likely reality, and that’s just damn exciting.

So my takeaway from this year in review would be to regularly assess where you are, make small adjustments as needed, and start building success early.  That early success and iterations on top of it can get you anywhere you want to go.  Grand thinking, inaction, and a lack of focus will just leave you staring at another year without any real progress towards your bigger goals.
