Why is email so important?

I love podcasting. I love listening to podcasts, I like making podcasts, and I like the business of making podcasts better for other people.  It’s an awesome content medium.

But you know what, as long as we have computers one thing will reign supreme over every other content medium:  Email.

Ok, go send an email to your 5 best entrepreneur friends and ask them what their most valuable business asset is.

Seriously, go do it.

Did you do it?  I’m not messing around. This is important stuff.

I’d bet you a beer next time we meet that the answer to that is their email list. No matter their business, revenue model, or level of success, almost every online business wins because of what they do with their email list. It is the one universal truth.

That being said, turn the looking glass around and examine your own most valuable asset.  How’s your email list?  What are you doing to grow it?

I can say this without judgement because at the time of this writing the list for this site has 3 members and PodcastMotor has 16.   I’m not exactly knocking it out of the park.  But I am conscious of it.

So what?  So what the hell can we both do to increase our most valuable business asset?  Well, I’m planning on a few things:

  • Start blogging more about email. List building, engagement, conversion, and sales.  This may well lay the groundwork for a future business opportunity
  • Talk to the best in the industry.  I’ve got Bryan Harris of VideoFruit.com scheduled to come on the Rogue Startups podcast in a couple of weeks. You bet your ass I’ll be ready to get the best advice and actionable game plan from him.
  • Get started today.  Today I’m deciding on which activity I’m going to undergo to get the first big push on my list here on craighewitt.me.  It will probably be a giveaway or promotion of someone else’s work and I’ll be following a script by Josh Earl, who is an absolute expert on the topic.  Much more to come on that soon.

So let’s stop talking about this.  Or let’s start.  Let’s start talking about what kind of action you’re taking.

Action!

Leave a comment below with the one thing you’ve done in the last 30 days to build or improve your list.  Let’s get the discussion going.
